TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Troy Athletics held his fifth annual Bench Out Breast Cancer to raise donations for breast cancer awareness campaigns.
Organizers said it took a team effort to execute the event.
“Mainly we got all the athletes involved,” said organizer Richard Shaughnessy. “We had some people from outside here also participate but the Athlete Student Council puts it together.”
Many people who were at the event have been personally impacted by breast cancer.
“There’s a lot of people who who end up dying or have somebody in their family that that has cancer or has has suffered from it,” Shaughnessy explained.
“Breast cancer means a lot because I’ve had a few people and my family with breast cancer so it’s very serious and I know the research and stuff that goes behind it, it takes a lot,” said spectator Gabbi Cartagena. “To see all these people supporting it, it means a lot to me.”
The event served as a way to encourage, uplift, and motivate members of Trojan Nation.
“I feel like these events are important to a team because it helps get people confidence because it’s a whole bunch of people out here cheering them on,” Cartagena explained. “It allows a lot of sports organizations to get together and have a good time.”
