TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — A special edition of Trojan Talk was held at Baumhower’s Victory Grille in preparation for the upcoming Sun Belt Championship.
Monday night Troy Football Head Coach Jon Sumrall gave his thoughts on the season and the upcoming championship game. Special appearances included Athletics Director Brent Jones, senior safety Dell Pettus and senior quarterback Gunnar Watson.
Watson, who is in his last season at TROY after a six-year career, said it’s been a bumpy ride.
“I’ve had my ups and downs but, overall, the past two years it’s made up for a lot of stuff. I’ve just enjoyed it, trusted the process, and I think the championship game is going to be a good one. App State is a good football team and I think we’re hungry for another championship.”
Watson’s last season has been one to remember. TROY will host the Sun Belt Conference Championship Game for the second year in a row. The team will face off against Appalachian State. Not only is the conference title on the line, it’s also a chance for revenge.
The last time these two teams squared off, the Mountaineers toppled the Trojans with a last second Hail Mary. Trojan fan Josh Faircloth says he expects that memory to motivate the Trojans.
“Really excited. We’re really looking forward for the revenge on Appalachian State from last year’s fluke Hail Mary. We’re looking to pack the Vet and bring the championship back to Troy.
Since that infamous game against Appalachian State, the Trojans have gone an extraordinary 22-4 — including a run last season of 11 unbeaten. It resulted in the Trojan Football Team being named the second best in the country behind national champions Georgia.
The success is due in no small part to Head Coach Jon Sumrall who took over for Chip Lindsey in 2022.
“Coach Sumrall has done a great job,” Faircloth told TrojanVision. “He and his staff they’ve came in, they’ve really had the team to buy in since last year to what they’re doing. He and his staff’s done a great job of managing that and managing the team.”
The game will kick off at Veterans Memorial Stadium at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2. Ticket information and prices can be found here.
