Troy University Gospel Singers hold Spring Concert

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — The Troy University Gospel Singers (TUGS) held its first concert of the semester.

“We are a group of people opened to all faiths and backgrounds,” said TUGS Director Carlton Copeland. “We explore Black gospel music, the spiritual, and Southern gospel music. Tonight was our spring concert and it was entitled, ‘Cry Holy.'”

Copeland says he based the concert around the opening song titled ‘Cry Holy.’

“I typically just start listening to music and if a song really resonates with me I tend to save it and I will loop the song. ‘Cry Holy’ was our theme song and I just kept looping that song and I found songs that went with that theme.”

A crowd favorite was the song “Total Praise.” Copeland says it is one of his personal favorite songs to perform.

“I always enjoy our closer, ‘Total Praise.’ We’ve been doing that a couple years now. We end every concert with ‘Total Praise.’ It is a song that everyone knows and is often a song that everyone will sing with us.”

Copeland says he is encouraged by the students he directs, whether they are performers or work behind the scenes.

TUGS rehearses Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 6:45 in Long Hall.
