Men’s volleyball club prepares for first tournament

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Troy University now has a men’s volleyball club after the team was created earlier this year.

“Overall, it’s really good,” said head coach Brandon Przywara. “We have a lot of athletic guys that are familiar with the sport. It’s going really well, since I’ve seen a lot of improvement in the two or three weeks that we have been doing this.

A lot of guys have been familiarizing themselves with the terminology and the cadence of the game. We are really just starting to pick up the speed with what, hopefully, we are going to play at.”

Most of the players on the team already had an interest in this sport before signing up and would play volleyball on a regular basis. Practices are on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday nights inside Elm Street Gym.

“I think it’s an opportunity to do something different and not just play around for fun,” said player Deerlyn Guzman-Lopez. “It’s more competitive and has a competitive aspect to it. It gives you more to think about and it matters more now.”

The team is already set to compete in its first tournament of the season. Although players are looking for a victory, they mostly want to use this tournament as a learning experience.

“For a lot of them that haven’t played competitively before, they really don’t know what they are in for just yet,” Przywara explained. “It’s going to come with a lot of growing pains and a lot of guys are going to get frustrated, but that’s okay. It’s really giving them the freedom to go out there and to play with what they are now learning. It also gives them the freedom to now do it to the best of their ability.”

The first tournament will be at University of North Georgia, where Emory University Men’s Club Volleyball will be one of the teams that the Trojans play against.
