Parking on campus: Is it as bad as some say? Students, TUPD weigh in

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — With the start of a new school year comes a familiar complaint, parking. But is it actually that bad?

Each semester sees students circling popular campus parking lots, taking to social media to voice their complaints, and demanding increased parking.

“It can be pretty hard to find a spot, especially close to where you want to park,” freshman Jonas Morisette said.

“I feel like certain days,” sophomore Erik Adams told TrojanVision. “I feel like it has its days when parking is good and when it’s not good.”

Amid calls for more parking, the Troy University Police Department (TUPD) is reminding students of under-utilized parking lots.

“The soccer field lot is always wide and open,” Sgt. Rachel Farmer said. “I hear the ‘there’s no parking available at all,’ and I’m like, oh, no, there is. The soccer field, I’ve never ever seen it full. Not once have I ever seen it full.”

When compared to other universities, TUPD says parking is not that bad.

“I don’t think they really realize how blessed they are that we do have some more convenient parking than larger campuses,” Farmer told TrojanVision.

In comparison, the University of Alabama’s campus is 1,143 acres large, which is almost double Troy University’s 650 acres.
