UPDATE: Teenager arrested after being connected to Troy University shooting
The incident just before 9:30 p.m. directly in front of the Trojan Wellness and Fitness Center, just off George Wallace Drive, shortly after Troy’s season-opening football win over Nicholls State on campus.
Anna McKnight, a senior rehabilitation and disabilities studies major from Montgomery, Alabama, was nearby when she heard the commotion. TUPD said a single shot was fired.
“I saw a group of people crowding together,” McKnight said. “I heard two loud pops, and I didn’t think anything of it. I thought it was firecrackers, but then people started running. I knew something was wrong when that happened.”

At 9:30 p.m., an Omnilert alert was sent out notifying students of an active emergency and advising them to avoid the area and seek shelter.
“Within maybe a minute, five police cars showed up along with an ambulance and a firetruck,” McKnight said. “The police told everyone to back away from Tailgate Terrace. They closed off the entire area with caution tape. I saw the ambulance take someone away.”
In a media release from TUPD, police confirmed a female student had suffered what was believed to be a non-life-threatening injury to her foot. She was immediately transported for medical care.
At 10:19 p.m. another Omnilert alert was sent out assuring students that there was no ongoing threat, but to stay clear of the Trojan Fitness Center.
Authorities have not identified a suspect or determined a motive. The case is still under investigation, and anyone with information is asked to contact TUPD at 334-670-3215.
