Yay or nay: Do students want an active shooter drill?

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — As school shootings continue to happen across the country, talks of a potential shooter drill have surfaced in Troy’s administration.

The Troy University Police Department (TUPD) said that it has been talking to the school’s leadership about a potential active shooter drill. However, what do students think about such a drill?

“I think it would be really beneficial for our school because it would really help us to be prepared for the real thing,” said freshman Maliyah Richardson.

“I feel like it would be good to have the campus prepared for something like that,” said freshman Eli Walker. “Shootings happen anywhere and everywhere.

“You can’t say any place is too safe, so I feel like it would be good to have students and faculty prepared for a situation like a shooting.”

Senior Anna McKnight, who was a bystander during a gunshot incident on Troy’s campus, says that if elementary schools can have active shooter drills, so should colleges.

“I think it’d be beneficial because even in elementary school, we had active shooter drills,” McKnight said. “Shootings happen at colleges, too. Florida State is what comes to my mind. I feel like it’s very beneficial for us to be aware and prepared for that situation.”

Although some students think that holding an active shooter drill is a good idea, senior Garrett Harmon is skeptical.

“I think it’d be smart to do a drill, but I feel like it would be difficult to get every single person to participate,” Harmon said. “I think back to when I was in the dorms, we had fire drills. Sometimes the drills would happen while I was in class or out getting food. Not everyone was able to participate.”

Even though there is no timeline on the active shooter drill, students are still encouraged to follow run, hide, fight if the situation arises.
