TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Fit checks, face cards and camera flashes. What do these things have in common? They were all on hand during the Welcome Week Fashion Show.
Students look forward to the first day of school for many reasons. Reconnecting with friends, gaining new experiences and, most importantly, the first day of school fit check. This year, Welcome Week included a first day of class fashion show and photos so students could put their style to the test.
“On the first day of school, you show up and you put on your best outfit usually, so we want to represent that and show off the outfits that people came and brought,” said committee member, Omari Brown. “We have people come and take their pictures, post it on Instagram, and people vote on who has the best outfit. The people can win a gift card and a t-shirt.”

While the gift card and shirt was a motivator for many students to enter the competition, some students used the show as an exuse to show off their signature styles and confidence.
“My style, honestly, it varies,” said participant Tahleek Shepard. “I have different types of styles, and I just like putting on clothes to be honest. What I like to show is just dress how you want to dress, just be yourself, be expressive and love it.”
Along with the fashion show, students and faculty alike were able to document their first day of class with picture from a photo booth. They were then able receive the picture digitally on their phone in a text message. Welcome Week committee members expressed the importance of self confidence and getting out of their comfort zones.
“I think its important for students to come to the fashion show because they get to express themselves, they get to find creativity in their clothing,” said committee member Zavier Long. “They get to not only find a spot here on campus within activities, but also express themselves within their clothing here and get out of their comfort zone.”
Welcome Week events span until Aug. 15. Students are encouraged to participate and meet new people in the Troy community.
