Student groups talk suicide prevention

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — As Suicide Prevention Month comes to a close, Trojan Outreach and the Troy Psychology Club is working to reach as many people as possible.

Tuesday afternoon, Trojan Outreach and the Psychology Club held a suicide prevention discussion in Hawkins Hall.

“I think that suicide prevention is important because talking about it really destigmatizes it,” said Julia Fagan, Psychology Club Vice President. “People that are struggling with it, when they’re able to come to a grip group setting like this and have someone presenting about the topic and hearing their peers talk about it, if it’s something that they’re struggling with or someone they know is struggling with.”

The event aimed to encourage students who may be afraid to talk or get help.

GET HELP: Troy reminds students of available resources during Suicide Prevention Awareness month

“I think the the main idea is to just help people understand there is a place you can reach out to if you ever find yourself struggling or that you maybe don’t know where you should go or where to look for help,” said Justin Henderson, Psychology Club Secretary.

Organizers helped bring this event to life in order to spread awareness about suicide prevention.

“We want to talk about suicide prevention because it’s the Suicide Prevention Month and we want everybody to get all the resources about suicide so they can realize that mental health matters and everybody can get the help they need,” said Soleil Copeland, Psychology Club President.

Another major goal of the evening was to make sure that students know where to go to get help. If you or someone you know is struggling, click here or call 988.
