Campus organizations team up for mental health seminar

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — For many college students, stress can feel like an everyday part of campus life. But organizers of a recent mental health seminar say having the right resources and knowing when to ask for help can make a difference.

The event was hosted by Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and Beyond the Surface, a student organization that works to make a supportive campus environment

“I’m just here to foster a campus where everyone feels seen heard valued and loved,” said Lydia Jones, Beyond the Surface President. “With our society today I feel like the information being pushed out from this organization is very needed.”

The seminar was focused on mental- health, self confidence and suicide awareness, which organizers say is especially important during Suicide Awareness Month.

“The event was mental health awareness slash suicide awareness because it is Suicide Awareness Month, so we were out here just giving tips and information on suicide and mental health,” said Kentavis Delbridge, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Polemarch. “Everyone needs to know this.

“There are some things that aren’t taught in class and just life so I feel like something like this could push out the information.”

Events like this give students the opportunity to have conversations about mental health and learn where they can turn for support.

“Eldridge hall is stuffed full of people and offices that are fabulous resources for students academically and then we have the student counseling center which is open and available Monday – Friday 8-2 for in person free confidential counseling. We have timely care our external partner that is available for virtual counselling 24/7 and 365.”

For Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and Beyond the Surface, the seminar was one way to bring students together, start a conversation and make mental health a topic that is easier to talk about.
