Janet Gaston, Senior Lecturer of Biology at Troy University, has been awarded the Dr. Robert Kruckeberg Faculty Excellence Award, presented by the University’s Faculty Senate.

The award honors the memory of Dr. Robert Kruckeberg, an Associate Professor of History who passed away in December 2020 at the age of 43 after a courageous battle with cancer. Kruckerberg had been a member of the TROY faculty since 2012.

Gaston received the award, which is presented to an outstanding lecturer or adjunct faculty member who demonstrates excellence in the areas of teaching, research and service, from Faculty Senate President Dr. Heather Small during Monday afternoon’s annual Honors Convocation on the Troy Campus.

Gaston, a two-time TROY alumnus, teaches courses in Biology, Organismal Biology and Human Anatomy and Physiology. She also serves as the program advisor of Pre-Health Professions and Biology Education.

In addition, Gaston has played an integral role in the Pike County Groundwater Festival, an annual event that brings Pike County fourth graders to the Troy Campus for hands-on activities designed to increase awareness of water supplies, conservation and environmental concerns.

Gaston said she was shocked to hear her name called during Monday’s convocation.

“It is very humbling to receive this award. I was very shocked,” she said.

Gaston is passionate about helping students find their paths and finds joy in their successes.

“I love seeing people get to where they want to go, and I love to see them find their dream,” she said. “It is just a joy, and I love it.”
