Troy University Mourns the Passing of Dr. Djuana Lynn Burns, Dedicated Nursing Educator

The Troy University College of Health Sciences and School of Nursing are saddened by the passing of Dr. Djuana Lynn Burns, DNP, FNP-BC/FNP-C, who served as an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing. Dr. Burns passed away on July 10, 2026, at the age of 61.

“Dr. Burns’ personal and professional impact on her colleagues and students will continue for many years. She embraced life and death with commitment, courage, and grace,” said Dr. LaGary Carter, Dean of the College of Health Sciences.

Throughout her tenure at Troy University, Dr. Burns was a committed educator and mentor for the BSN program, and the Graduate Nursing Programs. She served as scholarly project mentor and committee chair/member for numerous MSN and DNP students, guiding impactful research on topics including diabetes management, community-based physical activity programs for African American women, hypertension self-care, patient quality of life, and other areas addressing health disparities.

“The impact of Dr. Djuana Burns will continue to be felt for generations through every nurse she mentored and every patient those nurses will serve,” said Dr. Wade Forehand, Director of School of Nursing

“Djuana’s dedication to nursing education strengthened not only our School of Nursing but also the healthcare communities served by the graduates she helped prepare. A remarkable educator, trusted colleague, and faithful mentor, Djuana reminded us that the most meaningful lessons are taught through compassion, humility, and service.”

The Troy University community extends heartfelt condolences to Dr. Burns’ loved ones, colleagues, students, and alumni. Her legacy of excellence and compassion will live on in the many nurses she inspired.
