In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., TROY students will give back to the Troy community next week with volunteer projects around the city.

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his devotion to serving others, Troy University’s Office of Civic Engagement will coordinate three Days of Service next week, in which students can give back to the local community.

The MLK Days of Service take place Tuesday, Jan. 21 through Thursday, Jan. 23, and the Office of Civic Engagement will be working with student volunteers on a variety of service projects throughout the city of Troy.

Among the list of projects include outdoor improvements to the Civic Engagement outreach center, cleanup at a local elementary school nature trail and coordinating after-school activities at a local preschool.

“Service is woven in the fabric of our campus and our students, and I think it’s a very important part of the Trojan spirit and the Trojan way,” said Lauren Cochran, Coordinator of Civic Engagement. “We really encourage all our students to serve and give back, because we live in a country and a place where we are very blessed. Around Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we want to pay tribute to somebody who truly lived a life of service. We’re grateful to give students this opportunity to roll up their sleeves and give back to others.”

Students must register to volunteer. To sign up, visit https://my.troy.edu/service.

Through Operation We Remember, members of the Troy for Troops Center and ROTC cadets came together to honor these veterans and remember the lives represented by each flag.

It’s a powerful reminder that every flag represents a person, a story and a sacrifice that deserves to be remembered.

Today, and always, we remember.

We’re grateful to have this special moment preserved in our university’s history and to remember an icon whose light touched so many.🦋

From a farm in Dothan, Alabama, to a career of mak From a farm in Dothan, Alabama, to a career of making lasers, mentoring engineers, writing books and constant curiosity, Dr. Melisa Buie has built a life around one powerful idea: keep learning, keep experimenting and don’t be afraid to faceplant.

The first in her family to attend college, Melisa earned her bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Troy University before going on to earn a master’s in physics from Auburn University and a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering and plasma physics from the University of Michigan. Her career has spanned teaching, engineering, manufacturing, supply chain and global operations, where she has led complex transformations and helped organizations become better problem-solvers by learning to ask questions.

Today, Melisa is an author, speaker and leadership strategist whose work challenges us to see failure differently. In her book, “Faceplant: FREE Yourself from Failure’s Funk,” she encourages leaders to replace fear with curiosity and treat setbacks not as the end of the story, but as information that can help us grow.

Her story is a reminder that education is never just about where it leads; it’s about giving us the curiosity and courage to keep going.
