Three Troy University professors have landed on Forbes.com for their research into why the country is facing a shortage of accountants.

Dr. Josh McGowan, Director of the Carr School of Accounting, Dr. Ryan Dunn and Dr. Ventsi Stamenov, both assistant professors in the School, are featured for a March 26th article entitled “The Accounting Pipeline Shortage: Are We Making Progress,” released in Accounting Horizons, a web publication of the American Accounting Association.

Their study examines whether the accounting industry is doing enough to counter heavy workloads, insufficient compensation and lower job satisfaction to make the accounting field more attractive to new students and CPAs.

“We are honored to have our research highlighted by Forbes. Our work, which examines critical issues such as salaries and work-life balance, is contributing to important conversations among practitioners while directly informing what we teach in the classroom,” McGowan said. “The Carr School of Accountancy is committed to producing research that has a direct impact on the accounting profession.”

The study documented recent trends in real compensation, average weekly hours, and the link between workload and job satisfaction. Results found a significant decrease in weekly hours of 2.3 per week while real compensation has decreased by 3.7 percent between 2021 and 2024.

“Our findings highlight both progress and limits: firms are easing workload pressure but continued declines in real compensation may hinder long-term retention,” McGowan said.
