Beginning Aug. 1, Troy University’s College of Health and Human Services will have a new name – the College of Health Sciences.
The change was approved by the University’s Board of Trustees earlier this year to more clearly reflect current and future programs of the college. The new name also coincides with a new home for the college on the Troy Campus, Jones Hall, which is nearing completion. The building is named in honor of TROY alumnus Billy Jones and his wife Frances. Jones is founder and CEO of Crowne Health.
“We are excited about the growth and promise of our programs leading to careers in the health sciences,” said Dr. Kerry Palmer, Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. “Under the leadership of Dean LaGary Carter, I am confident that we will continue to see innovation and collaboration from this college that will attract new students to TROY. ‘The College of Health Sciences’ accurately and succinctly reflects the forward-leaning, practical mission of this college.”
The name change provides a bit of a “rebirth” for the college, which was established in 1994 and is home to the School of Nursing, the School of Social Work and Human Services and the Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotions.
“The renaming of the College of Health and Human Services to the ‘College of Health Sciences’ is a concise and inclusive representation of current and future academic programs,” said Dr. Carter, who is entering his second year as dean of the college. “We are experiencing a rebirth as a collective academic unit with new program proposals on the horizon. The College of Health Sciences also mirrors the evidence-based experiential training students will receive within the new Jones Hall Center for Health Sciences. We are honored by the successes of our alumni and excited about the future accomplishments in store for current students. We are confident our alumni will continue their support and service as ambassadors for the new College of Health Sciences.”
