Transitioning from living at home to moving out on your own is pretty challenging. When you are younger, you cannot wait to go off to college. The closer the time comes, you start to get nervous and wonder is this really the best idea.

College is a great experience, especially going to college away from home. I am from Mobile, Alabama, and there are plenty of colleges in the surrounding area. I thought about staying home but my parents thought I should go off to college and experience life. It can be very scary. I came to Troy University knowing only two people. The first two weeks I was so over college. I called my parents just about every day.

The two people I knew were the total opposite of me. I liked to go to the on-campus activities and they liked to stay in their dorms. I was determine to find people to hang with. In this post I will give FIVE tips on meeting new people.

Join organizations – I ran for my dorm senate seat for the Student Government Association. I won the seat for my dorm and I met some people. I also joined a modeling team. In college there are so many different organizations. I am sure there are at least two to three organizations that will pique your interest. Getting involved in organizations is a great way to meet people and get yourself out there.

Go to on-campus activities – They are meant for students! On-campus activities give you a chance to get away from the dorm and homework.

Theater productions are among the many campus activities students can enjoy.

Group chats – When I came to TROY, someone made a group chat for incoming students. The group chat gives you a chance to meet people. It gives you a feel for the people you are getting ready to come to college with. A group chat gets you acquainted with people before you get to college.

Consider joining a Greek organization – Joining a Greek organization gives you a brotherhood or sisterhood that is unbreakable. At TROY we have the National Panhellenic Conference, and Interfraternity Council, which have rush for students. Students have a chance to live in the frat or sorority houses and you become very close to your brothers and sisters. There is also a National Pan-Hellenic Council which has a pledging system.

Be Social – College is all about becoming social. College is about networking and making lifelong friendships and connections with people. Introduce yourself to people. Go to study groups with people in your class. Sit by someone in class. BE SOCIAL!

College is all about enjoying your life and having fun. Once you find the right people to hang with you will have the time of your life.
