TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Pam Smith is no stranger to downtown Troy murals, especially the one that is painted on the side of BlueKey Properties’ building on South Three Notch street.
“I originally painted the murals that you see here,” Pam Smith told TrojanVision. “We painted the first one in 1996 and ’97 and ’98.”
Over the years, Smith, a retired Charles Henderson teacher with 40 years under her belt, has brought groups of students to the Downtown area to paint murals. This one, though, is special.
“It was one of the first murals that we painted downtown Troy,” Smith said. “Back in the early to late 90’s a lot of the buildings downtown Troy area were boarded up, not being used. Downtown was going downhill, unfortunately. So I met with a lot of people in the city of TROY and asked if we could start by doing some murals to kind of inspire people to want to redo downtown.”
The mural highlights Troy’s rural areas and historic sites.
“We tried to bring in some of the buildings from the Pioneer Museum. We decided to do the cotton field and old cabins.”

Students from Charles Henderson High School and Pike Liberal Arts spent several days completing the project.
“I want to contribute to downtown and make it look better,” said student Riley Burkett.
“I think it is really special because we get to make a difference in the scenery around Troy ,” student Garrett Whitaker told TrojanVision. “I have lived here my whole life so I like to make people smile whenever they drive by it.”
“I just thought it was a good opportunity, once in a lifetime and painting is fun,” student Yaley Mclendon said.
Now that the mural is complete, passerby are encouraged to stop by and enjoy the view.
