Group fitness classes provide students with outlets to stay active

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — While athletes stay fit thanks to their practices, students have the same opportunity thanks to the Trojan Fitness and Wellness Center.

Whether it’s in the morning before class or in the evening after the rush, students have the opportunity to join a group fitness class. The wellness center offers yoga, spin party, dance fit and body pump classes.

“That’s what we aim to do, to provide services that cater and appeals to all of our students,” said Coordinator of Fitness and Wellness Wesley Taylor. “These classes are a service that we provide to the students for a cost of $30 per month.

“This cost provides our students with unlimited access to all of our classes and programs.”

In addition to a variety of activities to keep your body pumping, the wellness center also offers solo options such as treadmills, weights and ellipticals.

“That was kind of the big purpose of these classes, to provide a service for students to exercise and become a part of a community while finding that place where they belong, friend groups and things like that,” Taylor said. “Also, knowing that exercise plays a vital role in academic success added to this purpose.”

The wellness center also provides students a way to share their excitement for fitness.

“A way to get started is through a group fitness class,” said Cycle Class Instructor Markcus Cooper. “This is where you have a facilitator there to essentially ensure that you’re feeling supported and overall, coming and doing what you can for.”

Students can join however many classes they like.

“Specifically for my class, which is body pump, we focus on toning the body and building your strength,” said Fitness and Wellness Graduate Assistant. “Our class consists of working with barbells, kettlebells and doing a lot of body weight exercises while doing circuit-based exercises.”
