TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Troy University frequently refers to itself as “Alabama’s International University,” and so could its soccer team.
The team currently has three international student athletes on its roster with Norway’s Kat Vassilounis and Une Georgsen and Gabrielle Chartier, both from Quebec.
After playing her freshman and sophomore year at Oklahoma, Georgsen transferred to Troy as a red shirt sophomore.
“I think the main difference for me was I had to speak English,” Georgsen explained. “I didn’t grew up speaking English so I had kind of had to learn a new language. I decided to come to Troy because I really liked the coaches.”

Sophomore midfielder Vassilounis played her freshman year at Michigan State before transferring to Troy.
“It was really hard for me,” Vassilounis told TrojanVision. “I was really homesick and [it was the] first time I had to come out of my shell, be independent. But then, coming into Troy, I felt like it was so much easier.”
Also representing Canada is senior midfielder Gabrielle Chartier, who has played her entire collegiate career for the Trojans, including her freshman year when her season was split in half due to the cornavirus pandemic.

“I think I’ve grown a lot since I’ve been here and also like school-wise,” Chartier said. “My English got better and I also got better on the field so it’s really a plus for me.”
