Alpha Kappa Alpha holds breast cancer awareness walk

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Saturday, Troy University’s Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority hosted a Breast Cancer Awareness walk.

Students and community members were invited to the quad to show support for those who are battling the disease.

“It’s super important that we’re spreading awareness about breast cancer,” said Madison Mcelrath, a Alpha Kappa Alpha member. “We decided to host this event to get students out in order to learn more about breast cancer and how important it is to be able to catch it before it’s too late.”

Breast cancer survivor Regina Foster encourages everyone to check for the warning signs of the sickness.

“Breast cancer does not discriminate against anyone,” said Foster. “You could be male, female, black, white, big, tall. It does not matter. Just check yourself. If you feel something that doesn’t feel right, go get it checked out.”

The sisters of Alpha Kappa Alpha and Foster both say faith plays a huge role in the fight against breast cancer.

“Faith is everything for me,” Foster said. “I feel as if I didn’t have faith, I don’t think I could have went through the journey as strong as I did.”

“My relationship with Jesus Christ is super strong,” Mcelrath said. “I would tell anyone struggling with breast cancer to keep faith and keep pushing.”

Alpha Kappa Alpha’s breast cancer awareness walk marks the end of the group’s annual “Skee Week.”
