City of Troy honors breast cancer survivors

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the City of Troy’s Public Relations and Tourism Office held a “Pink Event” to raise awareness.

“Cancer doesn’t have a particular person to come to,” said Reginia Foster, a breast cancer survivor. “It’s important to celebrate the people that have been diagnosed or may have lost their battle to breast cancer.”

Several survivors spoke at the event to share their battle with the disease. They were each gifted a rose to recognize their strength. Reginia Foster is one such survivor.

“I was sitting on the porch, I happened to put my hand across my breast, and I found the lump,” she said. “Later, I found out it was cancer.”

Foster was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer at the age of 44. After a mastectomy and several rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, she is now cancer-free. She said the disease doesn’t define her.

“My breasts didn’t make me,” she said. “So, therefore, take it off. As a matter of fact, take both of them off.”

She said it’s important for everyone to be mindful and celebrate those who fight breast cancer every day. Positivity, she said, is what carried her through.

“You’re automatically going to think, ‘Why me?’ but I began to say, ‘Why not me?'” Foster said. “Do I get down sometimes? Yes. But that right there, it just made me stronger and stronger, and I thank God for the person that I am.”

The Public Relations and Tourism Office urges everyone to prioritize their breast health and get checked regularly. They explain that it might just save your life.
