Students experience international culture at Pakistan Night

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Troy students had the opportunity to immerse themselves in a new culture through the International Student Cultural Organization’s (ISCO) Pakistan Night.

“I think it’s really important to present my country so we can have a true view of the culture,” said Ashmal Fatima, an international student from Pakistan.

A short presentation covered the basics, important traditions and values of Pakistan. Those who attended could also sample traditional Pakistani food and tea.

“I brought some Pakistani snacks that are loved in Pakistan,” Fatima said. “They are called Pakora. I also brought some Pakistani tea called Chai.”

ISCO President Haley Morgan said this event ties right into the purpose of the club, which is to bring domestic and international students together to experience new cultures.

“I think it’s important to expose yourself to new things,” Morgan said. “It’s really nice to see all these people who have never interacted with someone of this culture to come together and have a nice time.”

Fatima said giving international students a platform to share their culture also helps fight against stereotypes.

“It’s really important to present a peaceful and true image of Pakistan so people know it is a lot different than it’s presented in social media,” she said. “Pakistan is a beautifully diverse country and the people are very welcoming.”

ISCO now looks forward to their annual ISCO Festival, a celebration of international culture through performances, food, and togetherness. That will be Nov. 21 at 6 p.m. in the Trojan Center Ballrooms.
