Troy alumnus speaks to new students at Odyssey convocation

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Troy University held the 2025 Odyssey Convocation at Trojan Arena as part of the Welcome Week festivities.

The event introduced new students to the university and its culture. The keynote speaker was Marine Corps Captain Morgan Long, an alumnus of Troy University.

“It’s always great to back on Troy’s campus, there’s nothing like it,” said Long. “It is home, so when you go away, you miss it, and when you come back, those memories and nostalgia hit you. Such a beautiful campus, so every time you get to step on it, especially when you’re alumni, is a privilege and a blessing, and you just remember all those great times you had when you were on campus here.”

Long was joined by Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins, Troy football head coach Gerad Parker, as well as the deans and student advisors of Troy’s five colleges. The Sound of the South and Troy cheerleaders lead the crowd in the Alma Mater and fight song.

Long gave one piece of advise to new students on how to get the most out of their college experience.

“Step out of that dorm room and get involved,” said Long. “Invest into Troy, and watch it invest so much more into you. A little bit of opportunity you take your freshman year, and going out and getting involved in organizations, is going to pay dividends later on in life.”

Troy leaders hope that through the speeches and activities, new students can become the best students they can be.
