Students react to TUPD’s suggested stadium safety measures

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Students are reacting to the Troy University Police Department Chief’s suggestions to make game days safer at Troy University.

The suggestions come after a student was shot in the foot during Troy’s season opener on Sept. 30th.

Chief George Beaudry suggested new safety measures to Troy’s administration. Those measures include a clear bag policy, metal detectors, and tailgating time limits.

Beaudry’s safety measures have to be passed by Troy’s administration before they can take effect. Some Troy students also voiced their thoughts on the new potential measures.

“I think Troy is a safe place, but I would feel a lot more comfortable in the game with these new safety measures,” said Anna Godbehere. “Especially since it’s there was a shooting so close to the game.”

“Metal detectors would actually be beneficial, I think,” said freshman Sophia Hussy. “If you’re patting someone down, you can miss something. It’s better to be safe than sorry.”

Hussy also says she’s surprised that Veterans Memorial Stadium doesn’t already require clear bags.

“Honestly, I thought this school already had that policy,” Hussy said. “I think it would be pretty good for the stadium to start requiring clear bags.”

If Troy’s administration accepts Beaudry’s safety measures, the cost of all the upgrades could equal up to around $300,000. There is no timeline as to when these measures will be approved by Troy’s administration.
