Sparkle Mentoring Club gives back to local school kids

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Thursday, members of Sparkle Mentoring Club volunteered at Common Ground Troy to give back to school kids in the area

“Sparkle partnered with Common Ground because we are all about working with our community and giving back and also being involved in Troy and the outside community,” said Ayana Griffin, a member of Sparkle Mentoring Club.

Common Ground is a non-profit organization that hosts summer camps and an after-school program for boys ages 6-12th grade. The after-school program offers academic assistance, free play, and social and emotional learning for its attendees.

“We have a great working relationship with all kinds of organizations at the university,” said Andrew Clem, after-school director for Common Ground. “We have been so thankful for all the help we have at Troy University and its students.”

Griffin, a sparkle volunteer, said the program has not only allowed her to help others, but has also helped her.

“Personally, I like being a part of Sparkle because I think I get to meet new people and kind of get out of my comfort zone. I’m a very introverted and shy person, so I get to meet new people and be myself and give back.”

Common Ground partners with many organizations on campus. Interested students can message the organization Instagram at @commongroundtroy.
