The Pike County Scripps Spelling Bee will take place at 9 a.m. on Jan. 30 in Claudia Crosby Theater on the Troy Campus.

The Troy University English Department will partner with the Troy Kiwanis Club to sponsor and host the Pike County Scripps Spelling Bee.

Last year, schools throughout Pike County held spelling bee competitions to determine the best spellers in each grade. On Jan. 30, over 50 students will compete in the county-wide tournament in Claudia Crosby Theater at 9 a.m.

The national spelling bee, which will be held in May, began in 1925 when nine newspapers joined together to launch the bee as a literacy effort. This year marks the 100th year of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

“The Scripps National Spelling Bee is an amazing organization, and we are happy to see Pike County’s participation grow from last year,” said Dr. Scott Nokes, an organizer for the Pike County event.

The judges for the event are Tiffany Button, who will serve as the pronouncer; Wesley Ralph, President of Troy Kiwanis Club; Jason Button, Vice President of Troy Kiwanis Club; and Tom Methvin.
