Dave Camwell, Troy University’s Professor of Jazz Studies and Associate Professor of Music, began a tour on October 12 in the Czech Republic with his musical partnership Covert Ensemble.
The tour includes stops in Jihlava, Kroměříž, Prague and Jiřetín pod Bukovou. Their first performance of the tour was for middle school students during the Mahler Jihlava – Hudba tisíců (Music of Thousands), an international classical music festival held annually in Jihlava to honor composer Gustav Mahler.
Camwell joined the TROY faculty in 2017. He met his musical partner, Czech saxophonist Katerina Pavlikova, online during the COVID-19 pandemic. The duo will also perform in the United Kingdom and Slovakia later this academic year, and they will return to the Czech Republic for additional performances.
Camwell said he is especially looking forward to connecting with new audiences, students and fellow musicians.
“Music has an amazing ability to create an immediate connection between people, even when we come from different places and backgrounds,” Camwell said. “Being able to travel, perform together, and share music that we genuinely love is incredibly meaningful, and I’m excited for the conversations, collaborations, and experiences that grow out of those performances.”
