Troy University’s Freshman Forum hosts a Necessity Drive

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Troy University’s Freshman Forum hosted a Necessity Drive to give back to the student body.

Freshman Forum and Trojan Pantry worked together to promote and sponsor the drive.

“Our delegates have worked really hard for this event and were taking in personal hygiene items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner and body wash things of that nature,” said Freshman Forum Director Caleb Smith.

Once all of the items have been collected, they will be donated to the Trojan Pantry. One of the pantry’s biggest needs is personal hygiene items.

“We wanted to think of something that maybe not been thought of before,” Smith explained. “A lot of people do coat drives, food drives things of that nature. The Trojan Pantry has a lot of food items, but they talked about needing hygiene items as well things people don’t really think about. We wanted to focus on something that might not necessarily been done before but the students truly need.”

Freshman Forum Chair of Community Service Liz Smith encouraged students to consider the struggles some students face while in college.

“I think community service is essential to any community, especially college communities,” Smith told TrojanVision. “A lot of students, this is their first time living away from their parents. It’s their first time living on their own, so I think it’s really important to consider that when we’re doing community service. The pantry is a big resource for a lot of students, so we just want to support them as much as possible.”

Smith encouraged students to put themselves in someone else’s shoes when considering whether to donate.

“Think of a fellow Trojan in need someone who might not necessarily say that they have a problem, but they just might need something discreetly. Just think about and help that classmate out who might need something.”
