TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Whenever you think of a disco, typically, you think of loud music, lights, and lots of noise. However, have you ever heard of a silent disco? Troy students got the chance to experience one last night.
The University Activities Council (UAC) quietly kicked off the semester in the Elm Street Gym with a silent disco. With three DJ’s to choose from, students were able to put on headphones and dance to pop, rap, and international music. Students also had the option to request their favorite songs.
“There’s a lot of different types of music,” said Tyler Mckinnell, a freshman business major from Auburn, Alabama. “There’s a lot of different cultures, which is really fun. Everybody is coming together, which is really nice. Seeing a bunch of different types of people getting into a bunch of different types of music is really cool.”
The silent disco ended up being a huge hit for international student Vraud Shah, who said the event allowed him to meet new people and learn more about the culture of the united states.
“I’m a new student,” Shah explained. “As an international student, I like to connect to people and get exposure to the culture of the United States.”

Students could also change between genres of music by putting on different colored headphones. Some of the night’s most popular songs included “Baby” by Justin Bieber, “Starships” by Nicki Minaj, and “Flex” by Cupid.
“We hit ‘Flex’ pretty hard,” Mckinnell said. “We’ve been learning some dances, I don’t really know the names of them, but we’ve been trying to figure some new ones out.”
UAC PR Chair, Kamyria Anderson, wanted the silent disco to serve as a way for students to meet new people and have fun before the semester kicks into full swing.
“The silent disco gives students the opportunity to come enjoy an event before the semester gets super busy,” Anderson said. “I want to let students know that they are not alone. They don’t have to stay confined to their dorm or apartment, they can come to UAC events and meet new people.”
For the rest of the semester the UAC, plans to bring back bingo night and DIY activities.
