Archaeology Day combines costumes and community

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Troy University’s Anthropology Club hosted Archeology Day for community children to learn about the past.

The Anthropology Club also awakened the Halloween spirit that Saturday morning by allowing the kids to dress up in their costumes and offer treats as an incentive to “lure” them into learning.

“Archeology Day is a big day for volunteers to come out and do community archeology where we get kids from from all across and kind of ‘tricked’ them into learning,” said Marlee Brand, President of the Anthropology Club. We provide arts and crafts, and fun quizzes like we do at the Zooarch[eology] table all with hopes of teaching the kids in a really fun way.”

Despite the event’s intention of encouraging the kids to learn about Archeology, parents also took away a few things from the event as well.

“We actually had an amazing time here,” said Shannika Elijah. “I learned a lot.

“I also enjoy watching the kids getting hands on learning, especially in the mud, and being able to understand what’s going on.”

Although Archeology is a field to get your hands dirty, Belle Bullard and Brand said it can go much farther than simply digging.

“It’s not a dead end job, or one of those useless degrees people tried to make it out to be,” said Bullard. “There are jobs you can get fresh out of school with only a Bachelor’s degree and not having to go for a Master’s for every single thing.
